Iraq: US soldier, 16 Iraqis killed as Sadr City ceasefire begins

“A shaky ceasefire appears to be taking hold in Baghdad’s Sadr City. A cleric who brokered the deal for Shiite fighters says they will honour it despite recent clashes that left at least 11 dead and 19 wounded. The pact is intended to stop seven weeks of fighting between U.S.-supported Iraqi troops and Shiite extremists. … Meanwhile, in northern Iraq, a roadside bomb killed five Iraqi soldiers in Mosul, police said. Iraqi and U.S. troops have launched an operation against Sunni extremists there. A U.S. soldier was killed just before dark yesterday when a roadside bomb exploded next to his vehicle in northwest Baghdad, the military said.” (05/14/08)
